Measles & the MMR Vaccine Debate
Why We Don't Publish on Vaccines
In the last issue, we published two small comments on vaccines. This was a deviation from the normal for Our Health Journal. Many of you ask good questions about vaccines, and you deserve an answer as to why we do not publish information on this topic.
Health is controversial, but a few topics within the sphere of health are extremely controversial. In our day, the topic of vaccines is king of this mountain. So far, our readers have appreciated an atmosphere within this journal that could be characterized by words like respectful, quiet, and (hopefully) enlightening. If information on highly polarizing subjects such as vaccines is included, there is a significant risk of ruining this atmosphere.
That risk is too great. However, many of you have an open mind and are asking us real questions. Open-minded moms and dads deserve thoughtful answers. At the end of the day, our goal at Our Health Journal is to provide you with several thoughtful perspectives and allow you to make your own decision. We are facilitators of respectful discussion and perhaps even respectful debate. We are not experts, but we do have some pointers for you.
Do Not Get Your Information From People Who:
- feel personally threatened if you disagree with them.
- get most of their information from news sources.
- speak evil of those in charge of various governmental departments (2 Peter 2:10).
- speak about vaccines as a “for” or “against” subject.
The topic of vaccines is far too nuanced to speak about it as one topic. The flu vaccine deserves a separate discussion, so does the MRNA vaccine, so do the vaccines that have been around for decades. Even the childhood dosing schedule is its own discussion.
There are no experts who have the answers to all our questions. However, there are people who are knowledgeable, competent, and can respectfully educate us. We want to allow you to hear from those kinds of people on many, many subjects.
A Respectful Debate on Measles & the MMR Vaccine
So, how do we honor the sincere desire for information and still keep the tone of Our Health professional and respectful . . . even quiet?
We would like to host a debate in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, intended to respectfully and comprehensively educate you on two topics: (1) measles and (2) whether we should get the MMR vaccine. This will provide you with both perspectives on this matter and yet shield our magazine from the noise of the discussion.
